Recording Modes

Open-ended questions support three response modes that participants can switch between:

Audio Recording Setup

How It Works

  1. Participant clicks the microphone button

  2. Browser requests microphone permission (first time only)

  3. Recording starts with visual feedback (levels, timer)

  4. Participant clicks stop when finished

  5. Recording uploads automatically

Recording Interface

The audio recorder shows:

  • Audio levels: Visual waveform showing input volume

  • Timer: Recording duration

  • Stop button: End recording

  • Playback controls: Review before submitting

Quality Considerations

  • Minimum 5 seconds recommended

  • Maximum 5 minutes per response

  • Recordings are compressed for efficient upload

  • Transcripts are generated automatically

Video Recording Setup

How It Works

  1. Participant clicks the camera button

  2. Browser requests camera and microphone permission

  3. Preview shows live video feed

  4. Recording starts with countdown

  5. Participant can re-record if needed

Recording Interface

The video recorder includes:

  • Live preview: See yourself before recording

  • Recording indicator: Red dot shows active recording

  • Timer: Current recording duration

  • Switch camera: Toggle front/back camera (mobile)

  • Playback: Review recording before submitting

Quality Tips

For participants:

  • Good lighting improves video quality

  • Minimize background noise

  • Look at the camera when speaking

  • Speak clearly at a moderate pace

Text Response Mode

Standard Text Input

Text mode provides:

  • Multi-line text area

  • Character counter

  • Auto-save on blur

When to Use Text

  • Quick factual responses

  • Participants who prefer typing

  • Situations where audio/video isn't practical

Switching Response Modes

Participants can switch modes before recording:

  1. Toggle buttons appear below the question

  2. Click to switch between Text, Audio, Video

  3. Mode persists for that question only

πŸ“ Note: If a participant starts recording in one mode, they can switch but will lose that recording.

Recording Quality Tips

For Study Designers

  1. Set expectations: Tell participants what you're looking for

  2. Time guidance: Suggest ideal response length

  3. Technical prep: Note that permissions will be requested

Transcription

All audio and video recordings are automatically transcribed:

  • Transcripts appear alongside media in the Responses tab

  • Available for analysis and searching

  • Support multiple languages
